Selkäsaari island, located close to the centre of Kemi right in front of the inner harbour, is known by locals as a turning back point on winter ski trips, a popular summer cottage area, and a pleasant recreational spot. Kemin Matkailu Oy also organises various activities on the island.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the town elite and others used to celebrate Midsummer’s eve in Selkäsaari, where people would travel to and from on steamships.
