Postikorttien matkassa – Muumit 80 vuotta ja Postcrossing 20 vuotta -muumikorttinäyttely

Kemin kulttuurikeskuksen aulassa on nähtävillä ainutlaatuinen muumipostikorttinäyttely 5.6.-9.8.2025. 

Minkälaisia muumipostikortteja on olemassa maailmalla? – Tästä tietää ehkä parhaiten kemiläinen muumikorttien intohimoinen keräilijä Airi Leukumavaara. Hänen postikorttikokoelmassaan on noin 700 muumikorttia. Hän on Suomen Postcrossingyhdistyksen aktiivinen jäsen. Muumien 80-juhlavuoden kunniaksi, hän tuo otteita kokoelmastaan nyt myös kemiläisten nähtäville.  

Idea näyttelyyn syntyi ystävien pyynnöstä ja se on toteutettu yhteistyössä Suomen Postcrossingyhdistyksen kanssa. Postcrossing on kansainvälinen postikorttiharrastajien verkosto, jossa lähetetään kortteja satunnaisesti arvotuille verkoston jäsenille, toiminta täyttää tänä vuonna 20 vuotta. Leukumavaaran muumikortteja on ollut esillä alkuvuonna Helsingin Esplanadin Moomin Shopissa ja lajitelma on postitettu nyt Kemiin. 

”Olen Airi Leukumaavaara, Pohjoisen tyär joka on jo eläkkeellä. Olen harrastanut postikorttien keräilyä niin kauan kuin muistan. Muumi aiheiset postikortit tulivat pikkuhiljaa minun elämääni. En vain raskinnut niitä lähettää eteenpäin, säästin ne itselle. Kunnes niitä oli iso pino ”varastossa”. 

Postikortteilu sai uuden ulottuvuuden noin 19 vuotta sitten, kun tyttäreni bongasi paikallislehdessä pienen jutun Postcrossingista (Postcrossing.com), maailman laajuisesta postikortti harrastuksesta. Siinä idea on lähettää tuntemattomalta tuntemattomalle postikortti. 

Postcrossing ei ole vain postikorttien lähettämistä ja vastaanottamista, vaan se on matka ympäri maailmaa, joka tuo esiin ystävällisyyden ja yhteyden eri kulttuurien välillä. Kuulosti heti minun jutultani. Tyttäreni avustuksella tein Postcrossing sivustolle oman profiilin, jossa kerrotaan muutamalla sanalla itsestä ja toiveista millaisista korteista tykkää. Varsinkin korona-aikana usein pelasti päivän, kun sai tehdä nojatuolimatkoja maailmalle. 

Tottakai maininta minun toiveissa oli myös muumit. Siitä se sitten lähti ja olen lähettänyt ja saanut liki 19 vuoden aikana tuhansia kortteja, yli 100 maata on edustettuna. Muumikortteja on tullut yli 20 maasta, lähinnä Japanista, Taiwanista, Hong Kongista ja Suomesta. 

Nyt kokoelmani sisältää noin 700 muumikorttia. Muumit ja postikortit ovat yhdessä ja erikseen mahtavia harrastuksia. Muumit ovat vaan ihania…niitä on helppo rakastaa.” 

Traveling with Postcards – 80 Years of the Moomins & 20 Years of Postcrossing 

A delightful and unique Moomin postcard exhibition will be on display in the lobby of the Kemi Cultural Centre from June 5 to August 9, 2025. 

What kinds of Moomin postcards can be found around the world? Few people know better than Airi Leukumaavaara from Kemi, a passionate collector and active member of the Finnish Postcrossing Association. Her collection includes around 700 Moomin-themed postcards, and in honor of the Moomins’ 80th anniversary, she’s bringing a curated selection to be enjoyed by visitors in her hometown. 

The idea for the exhibition came at the request of friends and was realized in collaboration with the Finnish Postcrossing Association. Postcrossing is a global community of postcard enthusiasts who send and receive cards from randomly selected members around the world. The project celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Earlier in 2025, Airi’s cards were on display at the Moomin Shop on Helsinki’s Esplanade — and now a special set has arrived in Kemi. 

”My name is Airi Leukumaavaara, a daughter of the North and now retired. I’ve been collecting postcards for as long as I can remember. 

Moomin-themed postcards slowly made their way into my life. I just couldn’t bring myself to send them, I kept them for myself. Before I knew it, I had a whole stash ‘in storage.’ 

Postcarding took on a new dimension about 19 years ago when my daughter came across a small newspaper article about Postcrossing (Postcrossing.com), a global postcard exchange project. The idea is simple: send a postcard to a random stranger, and receive one from another. That’s it. 

But Postcrossing is more than just sending and receiving postcards, it’s a journey around the world, revealing kindness and connection across cultures. It instantly felt like my thing. With my daughter’s help, I created a profile where I could tell a bit about myself and list the kinds of cards I’d like to receive. Naturally, I mentioned the Moomins. 

And that’s how it started. Over the past 19 years, I’ve sent and received thousands of postcards from more than 100 countries. Moomin cards have come from over 20 countries, most often from Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and of course, Finland. 

My collection now includes around 700 Moomin postcards. Moomins and postcards are both wonderful hobbies, together and on their own. The Moomins are just so lovely… so easy to love.”
